1. Laptop and Internet Access
A laptop or desktop computer is an obvious essential to survive online classes. Picking which computer to get is mostly a personal decision but there are a few factors to keep in mind! It’s very likely that you’ll be using your computer for things other than online classes — gaming, netflix, watching movies, etc. Your computer needs may also depend on your major. For example, film students usually need to have pretty intense software for their classes so they’ll need a computer with a little more power.
My top recommendation is a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro. The MacOS allows you to seamlessly integrate all of your apple products which makes messaging, transferring files, and switching between devices SO much easier.
2. Comfortable Chair
If you’re taking classes online, you’re most likely spending most of your day in a chair. It’s definitely worth it to invest in a comfortable chair that allows you to adjust the height. Your back will definitely thank you. Here are a few top rated desk chairs from Amazon:
- This chair is super affordable ($58) and rated very highly on Amazon.
- This Amazon Basics desk chair has great reviews and lots of features.
- On the pricier end, this chair was rated the most comfortable on Amazon.
3. Your Own Workspace
Whether it’s a desk in your bedroom, your kitchen table, or the school library — you’ll need to find your go-to workspace for online classes.
If you’re looking for a good desk to study at, I have this one in my house and I use it every day! It fits my aesthetic and I love the storage drawers!
4. Noise Cancelling Headphones
Headphones are absolutely essential for online classes, especially if you live with roommates. Your roommates don’t want to listen in on your lecture, and you definitely don’t want to be distracted by them when you’re trying to focus!
Don’t underestimate the power of a good pair of noise cancelling headphones. They will up your productivity game so much. These Pink Bose Noise Cancelling headphones are so cute and even have built in Alexa voice control.
If you’re looking for noise cancelling headphones on a budget, this pair has great reviews on Amazon.
5. Microsoft Office
From writing papers to putting together presentations, Microsoft Office is absolutely essential to survive online classes in college. Luckily, your university probably offers a free license for Microsoft Office. Check your school’s website for more info on how to download it!
6. Planner
I am a firm believer in keeping a planner at all times, but especially in college! You can plan for your future assignments and keep all of your social events organized.
There are so many options for good planners on the market, but I’ve linked a few of my favorites below. Just click on the images to shop.
7. Flash Drive
Glitches and crashes happen! Saving documents in multiple places ensures that your grade will never suffer due to technical failures. Make sure to have a flash drive or other external storage so that you always have a copy of your documents.
8. Grammar Checker
Even if you’re a great writer, a grammar checker is still a very helpful tool when writing college papers. It catches spelling mistakes, sentence structure errors, and will tell you if you’ve used a word too often in a text.
Grammarly is the most popular grammar checker out there and it’s totally free!
